What You Get With Quality Pavers

Your driveway stops being an embarrassment. Instead of cracked concrete that gets worse every winter, you have a surface that handles freeze-thaw cycles without falling apart.

Your property value goes up. Real estate agents will tell you that quality hardscaping pays for itself when you sell. But you don’t have to wait to sell to enjoy it.

You stop dealing with drainage problems. Properly installed pavers with the right base preparation channel water where it needs to go. No more puddles in your driveway or water pooling against your foundation.

Maintenance becomes simple. When a paver gets damaged, you replace that one paver. Not the entire driveway. Not a patch that never quite matches.

We Know North Carolina Weather

Union Landscaping and Hardscape S Corp has been installing pavers in the Charlotte area for years. We understand what works here and what doesn’t.

North Carolina’s freeze-thaw cycles destroy poorly installed hardscaping. We’ve seen too many jobs done wrong – inadequate base preparation, improper drainage, corners cut on materials.

We do the prep work right the first time. Proper excavation, correct base depth, quality materials, and installation techniques that account for our climate.

Our Paver Installation Process

How We Install Pavers Right

First, we excavate to the proper depth. This isn’t negotiable – shortcuts here cause problems later. We remove existing material and dig deep enough for proper base preparation.

Next comes base preparation. We install and compact graded stone in lifts, not all at once. Each layer gets compacted properly. This is what keeps your pavers from settling unevenly.

Then we install edge restraints and bedding sand. The edges hold everything in place. The sand provides a level, stable surface for the pavers.

Finally, we install the pavers and joint sand. Each paver gets set properly. We sweep in joint sand and compact the entire surface. Your pavers are locked in place and ready to handle traffic.

What's Included In Every Job

Every paver installation includes proper excavation and base preparation. We don’t skip steps to save time or money. Your project gets the foundation it needs to last.

You get professional-grade materials. We work with suppliers who understand contractor needs, not homeowner-grade products that look similar but don’t perform the same.

All installations include proper drainage solutions. We grade for water runoff and install drainage where needed. Water management isn’t optional in North Carolina.

We handle permits and inspections when required. Commercial projects and some residential work need permits. We know what’s required and handle the paperwork.

How long do professionally installed pavers last?

Properly installed pavers last 25-30 years or more. The key is proper installation – adequate base preparation, correct drainage, and quality materials. Pavers themselves are extremely durable, but the installation quality determines how long they perform without issues. We’ve seen well-installed paver driveways from the 1990s that still look and function great. Poor installation fails in 5-10 years with settling, shifting, and drainage problems.
Pavers are individual units that can be repaired or replaced individually. Stamped concrete is poured as one piece, so cracks affect the entire surface. In North Carolina’s climate, stamped concrete typically cracks within a few years due to freeze-thaw cycles. When it cracks, you’re looking at expensive repairs or replacement. Pavers handle freeze-thaw better because they can move slightly without cracking. Individual damaged pavers get replaced easily.
Paver installation typically costs 20-40% more upfront than basic concrete, but the long-term value is better. Concrete needs replacement in 10-15 years in our climate. Quality pavers last 25-30 years with minimal maintenance. Factor in property value increase and lower maintenance costs, and pavers often cost less over time. We provide detailed estimates that break down all costs so you can make an informed decision.
Sometimes, but it depends on the condition of the existing concrete. If the concrete is level, structurally sound, and has proper drainage, pavers can be installed over it with the right preparation. However, if the concrete has settling issues, poor drainage, or significant cracks, it needs to be removed. Installing over problem concrete just transfers those problems to your new pavers. We evaluate each situation and recommend the approach that gives you the best long-term results.
Pavers need minimal maintenance compared to other surfaces. Annual cleaning with a pressure washer keeps them looking good. Joint sand may need refreshing every few years – this is a simple process. Sealing is optional but extends the life and appearance of certain paver types. If individual pavers get damaged or stained, they can be replaced without affecting the rest of the surface. Total maintenance time is usually a few hours per year.
Most residential driveway projects take 3-5 days depending on size and complexity. Patio installations typically take 2-3 days. Weather can extend timelines – we don’t install in rain or when ground conditions aren’t suitable. Commercial projects vary widely based on scope. We provide realistic timelines upfront and keep you updated on progress. Proper installation can’t be rushed, so we build adequate time into every schedule to do the job right.
